خدماتی که جان لاک برای اقتصاد کرده است در آغاز کارهایی فلسفی بودند .او اولین توجیه را برای اموال ودارایی های شخصی و محدودیت برای دخالت دولت را در فعالیت های اقتصادی ارائه داد.او کمک کرده بود تا یک پایه های فلسفی برای توسعه سرمایه داری در قرن هفدهم انگلستان مهیا شود.و کمک کرده بود تا این مسئله در دوره ای که عقاید سخت گیرانه باورهای مذهبی مسلط بود پذیرفته شود .
